Each semester, I teach my undergraduate students fair use and copyright. Each semester, they get confused. Each semester, they ask really good questions that I can't answer. When one students commented this semester, "Why can't we just have a flow chart?" I answered, "It's just not that simple". But maybe it is.
I took on that task and made a decision-making flow chart for teachers. It doesn't explain fair use, or the classroom use exemption, but it does tell you when you need to look at those documents. Now's the time to get feedback from everyone in the community to make it a document worth sharing with the world. What do you think? What am I missing?
I plan on reading Copyright Clarity by Renee Hobbs this summer to make sure I'm not leading anyone down the wrong path. My goal is to make the flow chart as simple as possible (the opposite of actual copyright law) without being inaccurate. What other text do you recommend?
